Bird names for birds
Birders have been talking for several years about changing some bird names. Many birds are named after people who, in retrospect, we don’t really want to be memorializing for one reason or another.
So the American Ornithological Society has just announced that they are changing the names of every bird named after a human.
This seems like a good idea to me. Let’s give birds bird names.
My friend JR. also sent me this little cartoon with some other animal names that might be worth re-evaluating:
Switchfoot 20th anniversary “The Beautiful Letdown” tour!
Krista and I headed off to see my favorite band play my entire favorite album this week here in Portland. It was GREAT. We had a really wonderful time.
I didn’t discover Switchfoot until their second album New Way to Be Human, but they catapulted themselves straight into my #1 favorite band and have stayed there ever since.
Krista and I have seen them live five times… and when we saw them on the first Beautiful Letdown tour she was pregnant with our daughter who is now in college (and they were playing what, as near as we can recall, was a gym in Oregon, where we sat on the bleachers while all the “kids” crowded the stage).
Anyway, it was a great time, fun was had by all, and if you have a chance to see Switchfoot live you 100% should take it!
Don’t forget to read LOVING DISAGREEMENT!
We’re in a fraught moment in our culture, where even civility seems like an impossible goal sometimes. Our book is about how civility is too low a bar and how we can aim for something more difficult and better. It’s a hopeful book about us finding a way out of the toxic and hateful disagreements we’re invited to join with increasing regularity these days.
Bruce deep in the garden
We had what they call an “atmospheric river” around here this week, which means that going outside you’d get drenched immediately.
Bruce tends to keep tucked away and dry somewhere when that’s happening, but he did stick his head out during dry spells to get a nibble.
Peace to you!

AHH! I discovered Switchfoot via their second album too! And they're like tied with Supertones for second. Reliant K is no. 1. ;)
Beautiful Letdown is Switchfoot's magnum opus. I didn't know they were doing a 20th anniversary tour. How cool that you got to go and be drenched in nostalgia! Ok, I gotta go dig up my CDs and take a listen. I mean, pull up YouTube . . .
